Patience

I learned a very valuable lesson the other day. The kids were testing me and I was at the end of my rope. "Lord please give me patience" I cried! Then a wise friend told me " Don't pray for patience...pray for wisdom. I've found if you pray for patience you end up having to use your patience. Wisdom gets you through easier.... " The more I thought about that the more I realized that I have been using what little patience I have waiting to receive patience! Where as if I pray for wisdom and grace, I will receive it when it is needed to react to my children and other people who test me. With wisdom comes patience because my response will be one of God and not one of anger.

To The ER

So yesterday we had a little accident here. My son, who is 2, was being a typical boy & running through the house. Of course we had been warning him all morning to walk. Finally around 9:30 am his running came to an abrupt halt. He had slipped on the floor face first and split open his chin. So we the bleeding to stop and got everyone dressed & headed for the hospital. It didn't take long to get in, our hospital has a separate children's ER. So we got back there & they did all his vitals & measure the cut (about an inch long). Another Dr. came and of course put the medicine in the cut with a needle and some topical with cotton & tape over it. While we waited for that work we were shown back to another room. Well, there were so many kids in the ER that day, and of course only one Dr. on, they had to get a Dr. from the adult ER. Luckily he was good with children. About an hr & 1/2 later a nurse came in and cleaned his wound with saline & we proceeded to wrap him like a "baby burrito". Mind you he had been given some loopy medicine to help him be more cooperative. The Dr. came in and so started the pinning down war.

Now let me do a little back tracking here. My son had spent some time in the hospital for RSV when he almost 1. When I had taken him to the ER with 106 temp, on Halloween no doubt, the tested him for everything... including
Meningitis. Which of course requires a spinal tap. I was in charge of the oxygen tube while 3 other nurses, including a very large man was holding him down. They had given him 4 doses of Anesthesia, baby doses of course, and he was still fighting tooth and nail.

So to get back to the current visit, even tho he was loopy, he had 3
ppl holding him down again. One nurse, who was quite small, was sitting lightly on his legs on the gurney, I was holding his arms down, even tho they were pinned with the sheet, and another nurse was holding his head still while the Dr. did the stitches. Of course he was so glad when that was over. He was giggling and stoked that he had been so brave! So 5hrs. later we finally got home. As for today, the day after, he is still running through the house! ;)

New Camera?

Why are we so driven by & attracted to the temporary when we should be looking at the blessings around us? We spend all our time thinking up ways to gain another dollar to add to the stash for that new camera, car, tattoo, shoes, clothes, etc... Why is it that sweeping the floor & doing the laundry suddenly become so important the second your child asks you to play a game? Most of us wish we could go back to being a kid again when the worst thing that happened was we got grounded. Yet we ignore our own children because of THINGS that need to be done right that second, instead of staying up an extra 30 minutes at night to get those things done. We're so busy planning the future, where we're gonna live in a a couple years, where the kids are gonna go to school, & what we're gonna buy that we can't see the precious seconds that are just flying by. We wonder "Where has the year gone?" We should all be so thankful & want for nothing. Yet it's never enough. The list never ends. Most importantly, as one of my best friends puts it, why is it we will give ourselves that extra 10 mins. to stop & get coffee or check our e-mail one more time, but can't take 10 mins. to read a couple chapters in The Book Of Life, or to chit chat with God. Yet when we do go to God it's usually because we want something. Oh sure we add in there the thank-you's first, but we really just WANT Him to do something for us.

I'm not saying that planning for the future is a bad thing, cuz it is very important, but when we become so obsessed with planning that that's all we seem to do, it becomes dangerous. I, for one, am so weary and tired of wanting THINGS. What I really want is to play that memory game with my daughter & race those cars with my son. Life is so fleeting as it is, why can't I, pardon the pun, stop & smell the roses? I know that I am completely guilty of everything here. But I have discovered that my desire to change it is now deeper than my desire for that new camera.
